Tea Plantations
Tea is the most important agricultural crop grown in Sochi. The first planting of tea in the environs of Sochi was made in 1883 by the gardener of Mamontova's estate. In 1896 some Russian travellers brought 130 poods of elite Chinese tea seeds. But just 5 per cent of them sprout because of secret scalding before selling. But 5 years later Sochi obtained the most northern tea plantation of the world.
In 1901 the former Georgian tea planter Mr. Koshman came to Sochi and settled tea plantation of 800 bushes in Soloh-Aul. He'd been preparing 50 kilos of tea annually. The first tea plantations of tea in Krasnodar region were grown of his seeds. In 1936 they settled 15 hectares of tea in Adler and Lazarevskoe and extended those settlements up to 700 hectares in 4 years.
The tea grown in Sochi is called "Krasnodarsky". After the World War II they launched some more tea farms and 2 tea factories in Dagomys and Adler. In 1972 those factories merged into "Krasnodarsky Chay" union.
Producing of tea in our region is very profitable. In 1983-1992 they produced 8000 tons of tea. The joint profit of tea plantators reached 2.2 billion roubles in 1993.
Usually they gather in leaves within May and October. The best tea-growers gather 6-8 tons of tea leaves annually. Nowadays 4 types of black tea are grown in Sochi. Sometimes they are produced added with herbs.
A lot of tourists visit tea plantations each year. They also visit "Tea Houses" to taste the local tea. So did the President of Russia Mr. Putin.
